The world record in the raw squat is over 500 kilograms – an almost unimaginable figure for anyone outside powerlifting. But this exact type of record gave rise to a concept used today in any ordinary gym: 1RM, or “one-rep max.”
1RM simply means the maximum weight you can lift once, with correct form, on a given exercise. Elite athletes use it as an absolute benchmark; casual gym-goers mostly use it indirectly – as the basis for calculating everyday training sets, usually a percentage of that maximum.
The gap between the world record and an average person’s 1RM is obviously huge – but the underlying math is identical. Both start from the same simple question: “how much can I safely lift, just once?”
The rest is just a matter of scale.
