Over 80% of the world’s adult population consumes caffeine daily, in one form or another – coffee, tea, energy drinks. Statistically, it’s the most widely used psychoactive substance on the planet, more than alcohol and nicotine combined. And yet, we rarely look at it through that lens.
The reason is simple: its effects are mild, it’s legal everywhere, and it’s been culturally embedded for centuries. Coffee became a social ritual long before it became a research subject – the first public coffeehouses appeared in the Ottoman Empire in the 16th century, well before any scientific understanding of caffeine existed.
What’s changed since then is the quantity. Modern energy drinks sometimes contain 3-4 times more caffeine per serving than a classic cup of coffee – a jump our cultural habits haven’t fully “caught up with” yet.
It’s not a reason for concern, just a good reason to know, concretely, how much you actually consume in a day.
