The City That Banned Street Advertising – and What Happened Next

São Paulo, one of the largest cities in South America, legally banned street billboards in 2007 – a radical measure, unique at that scale, officially called the “Clean City Law.” Overnight, thousands of massive ads were taken down from buildings.

The initial reaction was mixed – some claimed economic losses for businesses, while others noticed something unexpected: the city “reappeared” from behind the ads. Architecture hidden for decades, forgotten facades, urban details no one had noticed anymore, became visible again.

The measure remains, to this day, a frequently cited case study in urban planning – a rare example of a major city deliberately choosing to reduce visual commercial “noise” in public space.

A city break in São Paulo, for this reason, offers a slightly different visual experience compared to most major metropolises.
