The Finnish Test That Estimates Diabetes Risk Without a Drop of Blood

The FINDRISC (Finnish Diabetes Risk Score) was developed in Finland and formally published in 2003, based on data from the large national FINRISK study – and it has one feature that sets it apart from most medical tests: it needs no blood test at all.

Eight simple questions – age, weight, physical activity, family history – are enough to estimate the risk of developing type 2 diabetes over the next ten years, with accuracy validated across dozens of countries since then.

Precisely because it needs no medical equipment, the test spread quickly worldwide as a free preliminary screening tool, not a diagnosis – a first signal, not a verdict.

A questionnaire that takes a few minutes, born in one Nordic country, became a standard screening tool on other continents entirely.
