There are real, rather than theoretical, examples of short trips – an extended weekend, a few-day getaway nearby – carefully planned around discounts, off-season timing, and alternative transport, that ended up costing, per person, less than an ordinary monthly specialty-coffee subscription.
It’s not a financial trick, but a matter of flexibility: accommodation and transport prices can vary several times over depending on the date, the destination, and how far in advance you book. The difference between an expensive vacation and an affordable one often lies more in the timing of the booking than in the destination chosen.
The idea isn’t to cut out life’s small daily pleasures in the name of saving for vacations, but to realize the two aren’t necessarily opposites – a well-planned trip can cost surprisingly little.
Sometimes the difference comes down to just a few clicks, made at the right moment.
