Adonis is one of the best-known figures in Greek mythology – a young man of such remarkable beauty that, in legend, both the goddess Aphrodite and Persephone, goddess of the underworld, fought over his affection. Centuries later, the name became a cultural synonym for the ideal male physique.
In the 1990s, fitness researchers borrowed exactly this symbolism to mathematically define a specific shoulder-to-waist ratio, considered, statistically, the most visually appealing among men – hence the name “Adonis Index.”
Like any aesthetic standard, it’s a cultural convention, not an absolute biological rule – but it remains an interesting example of how far a thousands-year-old myth can travel before landing, in a completely different form, inside an online calculator.
The name has changed meaning dozens of times throughout history. The story behind it, however, stays the same.
